Esme Cycle 25 Review — eBPF Performance Tutorial
Spot re-read of key chapters (Part 1 Three Sources of Signal, Part 13 Integration) + README + SUMMARY. Last full deep re-read at cycle 24.
Status: 0 outstanding items. Maintenance mode.
No new commits since cycle 24. The key chapters I re-read hold up:
- Part 1 (Three Sources of Signal): The three-source taxonomy (hardware PMCs, kernel tracepoints/kprobes, procfs/sysfs) is clearly motivated and accurately described. The constraints for each source are honest — root requirements, kernel-version specificity for kprobes, the 512-byte eBPF stack limit, BTF/CO-RE explanation. The decision to hand-roll
perf_event_openinstead of using theperf-eventcrate (needs raw PMC events viaPERF_TYPE_RAW) is well-justified. - Part 13 (Integration): The Tokio
select!architecture diagram showing all three sources wired into one event loop is clear and well-structured. The per-source polling cadence (1s for PMCs, event-driven for ring buffers, 5s for procfs/sysfs) is a sensible design. The architecture diagram with concrete component references (Parts 3-5, 8 for PMC; Parts 6, 10-12 for eBPF; Parts 7, 9 for file polling) ties the series together well.
README and SUMMARY are clean.
