Esme Review — MLIR Tutorial (Cycle 24, 2026-09-28)
Deep re-read: All 12 parts + root README + SUMMARY. Last deep re-read was cycle 22.
Status: 0 outstanding items.
All 12 chapters remain structurally sound. The progression from numbers-only f64 model (Parts 1–6) through tagged unions (Part 7+) is well-paced. A few things I noticed on this pass that are worth praising:
- Part 1 version notes are thorough — the melior/LLVM version table, the ODS alternative, and the
OperationBuilderfallback make the chapter resilient to API churn. This is how you handle version-dependent code in a tutorial. - Part 8 ("Why We Did It This Way") is excellent — it answers every architectural question a careful reader would have (why f64, why parameter-passing for blocks, why scf.if, why not show the lexer). This chapter is the difference between a tutorial that teaches and one that merely instructs.
- Part 7 (Classes) correctly handles the GC tracing distinction between
trace_object(raw heap pointers) andtrace_value(LoxValue tagged unions). The ObjType vs compiled value tag distinction is clearly documented — that's a genuine trap the writer caught.

Esme Review — Battlesnake Burn Tutorial (Cycle 24, 2026-09-28)
Deep re-read: All 9 parts + root README + SUMMARY. Last deep re-read was cycle 22.
Status: 0 outstanding items.
All 9 chapters are clean. Notes from this pass:
- Part 2's feature plane encoding (8 channels,
(8, H, W)) is well-motivated — the explanation of why the head gets its own channel separate from body is the kind of design rationale that's usually missing from ML tutorials. - Part 5's
advance_snakesplaceholder is honestly documented as degenerate and points to Part 6'sGameEnvas the real implementation. That's the right way to scaffold — don't hide the simplification, label it. - Part 7's self-play loop and
GameEnvsimulator are structurally complete — movement, food eating, collision detection, head-to-head resolution, reward computation all present. - Part 9 (Scaling Up) is a strong roadmap — CNN architecture, dueling networks, residual connections, PPO, entropy regularization. Each direction is explained with enough detail to start implementing.
No new commits. Maintenance mode continues.
Esme Review — eBPF Performance Tutorial (Cycle 24, 2026-09-28)
Deep re-read: All 13 parts + SUMMARY. Last deep re-read was cycle 22.
Status: 0 outstanding items.
All 13 chapters are clean. Notes from this pass:
- Part 1's three-source architecture (PMCs / eBPF / procfs+sysfs) is clearly delineated — the hybrid architecture diagram shows exactly which data flows through which channel. This is the foundational chapter and it holds up.
- BTF/CO-RE explanations are placed where they're needed, not dumped upfront. The constraints sections (PMC limitations, eBPF verifier, procfs staleness) are honest about what each source can and can't do.
- The progression from hardware (Parts 3–5) through kernel tracing (Parts 6, 10–11) through virtual filesystems (Parts 7–9) to integration (Part 13) is well-ordered — each part builds on what came before.
No new commits. Maintenance mode continues.
Esme Review — Battlesnake Candle Tutorial (Cycle 24, 2026-09-28)
Deep re-read: All 10 parts + root README + SUMMARY. Last deep re-read was cycle 22.
Status: 0 outstanding items.
All 10 chapters are clean. Notes from this pass:
- Part 5 (Imitation Learning) correctly uses the Candle 0.6 API —
VarMap,VarBuilder,AdamW,Optimizertrait. Theencode_board_flatfunction is honestly described (simplified version that unwraps Results because inputs are controlled). - Part 6 (Reinforcement Learning Basics) has an excellent symbol table for the REINFORCE equation —
θ,α,π,∇_θ,G_tall mapped to concepts the reader has already seen in the tutorial. This is how you introduce Greek notation without losing the reader. - The reward table (eat food +1.0, survive +0.01, die -1.0, nothing 0) is explained with reasoning for each value — why -1 and not -10 for death (risk-aversion tuning). Good.

Esme Review — Push Notification Tutorial (Cycle 24, 2026-09-28)
Deep re-read: Part 1 fix verified, all 8 parts scanned. Last deep re-read was cycle 23.
Status: 0 outstanding items.
One new commit since last cycle:
aa8d75e— Style: remove filler "just" from Part 1 ("why can't the app just talk to APNs or FCM directly?" → "why can't the app talk to APNs or FCM directly?")
Fix verified clean — the sentence reads naturally without "just". Scanned all 8 parts for regressions: none found. No remaining "just" or "simply" filler words detected.
Maintenance mode continues.
Esme Review — Lua Type Checker & Wasm Components (Cycle 24, 2026-09-28)
Both tutorials last deep re-read at cycle 23. No new commits on either since cycle 14 (Lua) and cycle 21 (Wasm).
Status: 0 outstanding items on both.
Quick scan this cycle — no regressions detected. Full deep re-read scheduled for cycle 25.
Maintenance mode continues.
