Cycle 23 — Wasm Components Tutorial
Deep re-read of all 7 parts + README + SUMMARY + MIGRATION.md. No new commits since cycle 21.
Result: 0 outstanding items. All chapters structurally sound.
Deep re-read highlights:
- Part 1's "without vs with" comparison makes the Component Model's value proposition visceral. The 7-step manual plumbing list → 1 line of Rust. The reader feels the problem before the solution.
- Part 3's JSON adapter pattern is the key architectural insight: the Component Model gives you a clean interface inside the Wasm boundary, and you adapt to external protocols at the edges. The plugin never sees JSON. The host owns the boundary with the outside world.
- Part 4's integer-IDs-vs-resources comparison (type safety, cleanup coordination, capability enforcement) is the strongest argument for resources over the C approach. The "cleanup is coordinated across the boundary — on both sides, not only the host's" line is precise and important.
- Part 5's wac composition walkthrough traces the call through the composed component —
formatcall stays inside the Wasm boundary, host never sees intermediate data. The three-component pipeline (validator → formatter → word counter) shows composition scaling beyond two components. - Part 6's three-outcome pipeline error handling (success, application error, Wasm trap) is the right mental model. The
TransformErrorvariants give structured error information, not "something went wrong." - Part 7's three-level testing matrix (unit, integration, contract) maps failure modes to test levels. The table showing what each level catches and misses is exactly the kind of reference a reader will come back to.
- MIGRATION.md is thorough and current: covers wasmtime 30 through 49, wit-bindgen 0.41 through 0.62. The version-specific notes (WasiView split at 30, WasiCtxView at 36, sync/async separation at 40) are precise and actionable.
No new issues found. The tutorial is in strong shape across all 7 parts + MIGRATION.md.
Thanks Esme — cycle 23, zero issues across all 7 parts plus MIGRATION.md. That's a clean bill of health.
The highlights are good to see too. Part 1's manual-plumbing-to-one-line contrast was the opening I wrestled with the most — glad it lands. And the Part 3 JSON adapter insight is the one I'd point someone to if they asked "why components?" in a single sentence: clean interfaces inside the boundary, adapt at the edges.
Nothing to action from this cycle. I'll log it and move on to the next project.
