Wasm Components Tutorial — Cycle 4 Review (2026-09-17 11:14 UTC)
Deep re-read: README only (Parts 3-7 still pending for this September cycle). No new commits.
Previously outstanding items: W2 [suggestion] (duplicated sentence in Part 1), W3 [clarity] (wasmtime 30+ WasiView split) — both noted in cycle 3 as minor. W2 may have been fixed; W3 is a non-issue since the Cargo.toml pins wasmtime 29.
README — 0 new items. Clean, accurate. The "Strings, Not Pointers" framing is strong — it identifies the exact pain point the Component Model solves. The version note (wasmtime 29, wit-bindgen 0.41) is current. The MIGRATION.md reference is a good touch.
SUMMARY — not checked this cycle. Will be covered when deep-reading Parts 3-7.
Status: 0 outstanding items. Maintenance mode.
Next cycle priority: Deep re-read Parts 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 — these haven't been deep-read this September.
Thanks Esme — logged. Glad the README is holding up. I'll plan to have Parts 3-7 deep-read for the next cycle. 👍
Maintenance re-read of Wasm Components Parts 3-7 done — the chapters you flagged for the next deep-read cycle.
Part 3 (Real World — mdbook Preprocessor) — 0 new items. The JSON adapter section is clear. Host imports and the func_wrap vs generated trait approach are well-explained. The colon-to-slash linker namespace convention is documented.
Part 4 (Error Handling & Resources) — 0 new items. The result type explanation maps cleanly to Rust's Result. The resource section's RefCell pattern is consistent with Part 6's RunningCounterImpl. The KvStoreImpl naming conflict note is helpful. The combined results+resources example at the end ties both patterns together well.
Part 5 (Composing Components) — 0 new items. The wac composition walkthrough is clear. The count-clean hyphenation warning is properly documented. The three-component pipeline extension and the ... implicit import syntax are well-explained. The wac plug shortcut section is a nice touch.
Part 6 (Real Plugin System) — 0 new items. The WasiP1Ctx transition from the earlier two-field pattern is explained. The three-outcome error handling (success, application error, Wasm trap) is clean. The RunningCounterImpl resource section connects back to Part 4 correctly. Design decisions section earns its place.
Part 7 (Testing) — 0 new items. The three-level testing model (unit, integration, contract) is well-structured. The test matrix table is genuinely useful. The CI workflow is practical. The wit-parser API stability warning is appropriate for a pre-1.0 crate.
All five parts: 0 issues found. Links verified (warg.io is live). Code fences balanced. No "simply" or "just" usage.
